The story behind it
Together, pine, bamboo and plum are traditionally called the Three Friends of Winter. Kyoto National Museum traces the grouping to Chinese scholar culture and describes its adoption in Japan, where the plants appear on objects used for celebrations including New Year. Their endurance through cold weather underlies this shared seasonal identity.
How to display it
For a New Year entryway, place the gold ground against a muted taupe wall and choose a narrow walnut frame. Leave the top of the entrance cabinet mostly clear, with a shallow tray for everyday belongings. When showing the image on a television, lower the screen's brightness until the gold looks warm rather than luminous, keeping the red plum blossoms easy to distinguish.
Why it looks this way
Pine, bamboo and red plum share one gold ground, spread across the picture the way a folding screen carries a scene from panel to panel.
